About us
Ungelt, also known as the Týn Courtyard, is one of Prague's most historically significant sites. This complex of buildings originated as a fortified merchant’s court, providing a safe haven where traders could rest upon payment of a fee. This toll was known by the Old German word "ungelt", from which the area derives its present-day name. In addition, the merchants had access to a courtyard, a hospital, and a church. The oldest Romanesque houses began to emerge around the perimeter of the courtyard, which served as a bustling marketplace. The original 11th-century foundations of the "Jewish House" – which now hosts Theatre Ungelt and its Café Hein – are still visible today in the theatre’s foyer. A rare fragment of a Gothic quadrilobe featuring a coat of arms (a fresco located directly above the café bar) dates back to the 14th or 15th century.
The painting on the front wall of the adjacent room is a contemporary work. Created by Stanislav Sůva based on a design by film architect Jan Vlček and it is echoing the style of Late Baroque theatre scenery. Theatre Ungelt, located in the building’s cellar, was founded by Milan Hein in 1995, alongside the legendary Czech actor Miloš Kopecký. The café interior is adorned with photographs documenting over thirty years of history of the Theatre Ungelt.
